SAN MATEO DOG TRAINING CLUB

Classes

The SAN MATEO DOG TRAINING CLUB ("SMDTC") has provided obedience and conformation training to the public for over 50 years. Each class session is 8 weeks and meets at our new location on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. We are a licensed AKC Club which holds an AKC obedience trial once a year. This event is open to the public and is held in mid-January along with Santa Clara Dog Training Club and San Francisco Dog Training Club.

Puppy Kindergarten

This class is for puppies from 12 weeks up. It provides socialization and an introduction to basic obedience training.
The first night of class is orientation so please do not bring your puppy.

Meets Thursdays 6:30-7:30 p.m. (starting LATE WINTER SESSION). Limit: 10.

Basic Obedience

This class is for dogs 6 months and older that have completed our Puppy Kindergarten class or that have had little or no previous training. In this class, you will train your dog in the basic obedience exercises: heeling, coming when called, three stay exercises - sit, down, and stand.

Required equipment:

  • Plenty of yummy and easy to eat treats you know your dog LOVES! Dog's attitude should be: "Wow, how do I get more of that?!"
  • Treat pouch you wear
  • 6-foot leash; NO retractable leashes
  • Regular flat collar plus any training collar you may already have in use (training collar not mandatory; options will be demonstrated).

Meets Monday evenings 6:30-7:20 pm. Class Limit: 12

Intermediate Obedience

This class is for dogs that have completed our Basic Obedience class or for dogs that have trained elsewhere and completed an AKC-obedience styled course. To ensure proper class placement, dogs will need to be evaluated on the first night of class if not enrolled in the previous training session at SMDTC. This class reinforces the basic exercises as well as working on the following exercises: finish, figure 8, distance stays, distance recall, and focus on the owner in the face of distractions. Participants must also bring a flexi-lead or long line. In addition to the required equipment for Basic (see above) students should bring a long line or retractable lead.

Pre-Novice Class

Curious about the various sports and activities you can engage in with your dog? Interested in learning different ways to motivate and teach your dog, or just looking for opportunities to reinforce what your dog already knows (but doesn't always do)?

Then THIS class is for you!

Each week one or two training methods and skills will be introduced and demonstrated. Handlers and dogs will have an opportunity to try the training concepts in class.

Come and learn how to utilize clicker training, target training, play training and more! We'll explore the foundation skills for obedience competition, Rally, Canine Good Citizen, agility and more.

**PREREQUISTES:

  • Dogs must have prior formal obedience training and be under control of their owner.
  • No dogs with aggression problems.
  • Dogs must be 1 year old or older.

Meets Thursdays 7:30-8:30 p.m. (starting LATE WINTER SESSION).

Conformation (NEW TIME!)

These classes provide socialization as well as instruction on handling your dog or puppy in breed competition. Class in held on a drop-in basis, meaning no pre-registration is required. You will be asked to fill out an information sheet once a year.

PLEASE NOTE: Every Wednesday year round, no pre-reg needed.

"Drop-in": $12.00 per dog. Meets Wednesdays 7:30 p.m. Limit 20


Rally (NEW CLASS!)

Using a variety of Rally signs each week, this class will teach the correct performance of each exercise, how to walk and memorize a course, the criteria that judges use to evaluate your performance and hints on how to compete successfully. Your dog must have a basic heel, sit, down and front in order to benefit from the class.

Meets Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Friday Obedience Ring Ready!

"Ring Ready!" is for people who are showing or thinking of showing in obedience trials and want to improve their obedience trial ring performance. Taught by Ronnie Sue Leith, this class is open to all levels from beginner novice through utility. It will meet once a month usually on the 3rd Friday, from 7-10 pm. Because space is limited, you must make a reservation for a spot each time you want to come. Email Ronnie Sue at rsleithmd@sbcglobal.net to secure your spot no later than the Wednesday preceding the class night. Include in your email what level you want and how many runs.

Next classes will be held on Friday, January 17, 7-9pm, Friday, February 21, 7-9pm, and Friday March 21, 7-9pm.

Sunday Ring Ready!

As of January 2012, in addition to our extremely popular monthly Friday night Ring Ready Obedience Class, we will be offering Ring Ready Obedience two Sunday afternoons each month. We hope those of you who cannot come on a Friday evening, or those who would like additional opportunities to practice with your dogs, will take advantage of this new offering. Beginning Freestyle Class

Paws 4 Fitness

Freestyle and fitness class for retired dogs, senior dogs and overweight dogs. Conditioning and repertoire created to music! Regain flexibility, agility, and coordination while being challenged with new training exercises.

Rally Ready!

"RALLY READY!" is for people who want to improve their Rally skills for a more successful ring performance. Taught by Harriet Tucker, this class is open to all levels, from Novice through Excellent. It will meet once a month, usually on the 1st Friday, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Because space is limited, you must make a reservation for a spot each time you want to come. Parking

Parking is extremely limited in the 217 lot. After 6:00pm you may park in any available slot in the complex.
DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF ANY GARAGE DOORS OTHER THAN THE SMDTC DOOR, AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT.
There is ample street parking. Crating inside the building is limited to conformation class participants only.

PLAN TO ARRIVE A FEW MINUTES EARLY to check-in with registration and PLEASE REMEMBER to bring written proof of your dog's current vaccinations, including rabies. You may download an application from our website or call 650-508-1300 to have one mailed to you.
